Shakira, Chili Peppers lead MTV Video Music Awards 2006 nomineesWith seven nods apiece, Shakira and The Red Hot Chili Peppers  lead the field of nominees for the 23rd Annual MTV Video Music Awards.

All of Shakira's nominations came for her "Hips Don't Lie" clip, while the Chili Peppers' noms came for their "Dani California" video.

Close behind with five nominations each are Madonna  "Hung Up" and Panic! At the Disco's "I Write Sins Not Tragedies." Christina Aguilera  "Ain't No Other Man" got four nods.

This year's awards will be handed out during an Aug. 31 broadcast from New York's Radio City Music Hall.

Among the acts already scheduled to perform during the ceremony are Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, T.I., Panic! At the Disco, Ludacris and The Killers. The Raconteurs "will provide the soundtrack" throughout the show, according a press release.

The ceremony's host, additional performers and presenters will be announced shortly, according to MTV.

All nominated videos are streaming at the MTV Overdrive website.

Nominees are determined by about 2,000 people that MTV, in a press release, calls "an exclusive industry group and viewers" that include representatives from record labels, production companies and management firms.

For the first time, voting for the awards' General Categories will be open to all viewers. Fans can begin casting their votes today at MTV's VMA website.
