U2 has announced plans to release what the group is describing as a "definitive" best-of collection that will also include two new songs.
The as-yet-untitled set, which is due in stores Nov. 20, will feature 16 of the band's best-known songs, according to U2.com, though the specific tracklisting remains a mystery. What is known is that the disc will also house two cuts the band recorded last month at London's Abbey Road studio with producer Rick Rubin.
As previously reported, one of those new tracks is a cover version of The Skids' "The Saints Are Coming," for which U2 teamed with fellow rockers Green Day. The two groups debuted the song during a live performance that aired on ESPN prior to last week's "Monday Night Football" matchup between the New Orleans Saints and the Atlanta Falcons, which marked the reopening of the Louisiana Superdome. The cut will be released as a digital download on Oct. 30 and as a CD-single on Nov. 6, with proceeds benefiting Music Rising. Co-founded by U2 guitarist The Edge, the organization replaces instruments and equipment that Gulf Coast musicians lost due to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Additional details about the other new track haven't been revealed.
The upcoming best-of set will be U2's third such release. "The Best of 1980-1990" surfaced in 1998, and "The Best of 1990-2000" followed in 2002.
U2's most recent all-new studio set is 2004's "How to Dismantle and Atomic Bomb," which earned the group five Grammy awards, including Album of the Year. The group has been working with Rubin on a follow-up set that's expected to surface sometime next year.
