The 39-year-old rapper is producing 'Fela!’ - a play based on the life of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, who is credited as one of the founders of afrobeat and who died in 1997 – with Hollywood couple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.
Jay-Z – whose artistic involvement is thought to be minimal given that the show is already in previews – has not publicly revealed how much money he has invested in the production. |

 BEYONCE has won three awards at this year's MTV Europe Music Awards.
The singer fought off X Factor winner Leona Lewis to land the Best Female gong at last night's ceremony in Berlin, Germany.
She also won Best Song for Halo and Best Video for Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) which she dedicated to rapper husband Jay-Z, for "putting a ring on it".
Jay-Z was also in the city to perform with U2 at a free open-air concert at the Brandenburg Gate to coincide with the event, which was held in the city to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. |

 The 39-year-old Brooklyn native performed to a sold-out crowd Friday night for his "Answer the Call" concert, which paid tribute to the police officers and firefighters who died responding to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The Pledge of Allegiance kicked off the show, followed by "The Star-Spangled Banner" infused with an electric guitar. Jay-Z continued with his own New York anthems — including "Empire State of Mind"; "Where I'm From," a song about his upbringing in the Marcy housing projects complex; and "Brooklyn Go Hard," a collaboration with alternative singer Santigold.Since the collapse of the World Trade Center on 9/11, many people have helped rebuild New York City in different ways.  BEYONCE and Jay-Z's bodyguard is being investigated after being involved in an altercation with photographers.
The couple are on holiday in the coastal city of Dubrovnik in Croatia but their romantic evening out in the town on Tuesday (18Aug09) was marred when one of their minders tussled with snappers as he attempted to shield the pair from pictures.
Footage of the incident shows the bodyguard, named only as Julius, wrestling with snappers in an alleyway as the couple leaves a restaurant. |

The 'Umbrella’ songstress has decided to move away from her usual R’n’B sound and has teamed up with British duo Chase and Status for her 'big change'.
Chase and Status’ Saul Milton said: 'We’ve spent the past few weeks working with Rihanna and her people in an undisclosed location. She’s a lovely girl, so professional and it was an honour to work with her. The stuff she’s doing now I would definitely go out and buy myself, it’s a big change.'
According to Saul, the 21-year-old singer approached him and bandmate Will Kennard after being played some of their music. |

 Beyonce Knowles has hinted she may get pregnant when she finishes her current world tour.
The Crazy in Love singer - who married rapper Jay-Z in a secret ceremony last April - hasn't got time to start a family now but insists she does want to become a mother.
She said: "I think I'll have a child when it's supposed to happen. Right now, I'll be on tour for a year and, you know."
Although she is keen to have children at some point, Beyonce says her broody feelings are being satisfied by her younger sister Solange's son, four-year-old Jules. |

 JAY-Z has revealed that he has dropped his record label out of frustration.
The rapper said he turned his back on Def Jam recordings because of their distribution deals.
And he confirmed that his new album Blueprint 3 will be distributed via Atlantic Records.
Jay-Z, real name Shawn Corey Carter, was the former CEO of Def Jam Recordings but reportedly bought out of his contract for $5 million in 2004.

The crowd at the annual Black Entertainment Television Awards fell silent as Jackson strode onstage.

 Daniel Merriweather was in shock when he met Jay-Z.
The 'Change' singer is now a friend of the '99 Problems' rapper but admits he was lost for words when the pair were first introduced.
He said: "When I first met him, he almost seemed mythical - like, 'Oh my God, it's Jay-Z!' That's because he symbolises that whole era of hip-hop.
And he's still great - there's always an extra level of awareness in whatever he does.
"I do see him quite a lot socially because he's a friend of a friend, but I'm a genuine fan. He's great to hang out with, he's very controlled, you can tell there are always cogs turning in his mind, and he never has his guard down completely." |

 Beyonce Knowles reportedly refused to walk to her car in the cold after rehearsing for US President Barack Obama's pre-inauguration concert.
The 'If I Were A Boy' singer was furious when she was told she would have to make her own way to her car four blocks away as the surrounding streets had been shut amid heightened security before the event.
Police refused to bow to her demands, but the US Secret Service eventually decided to allow her driver to come and pick her up.
A host of celebrities converged on Washington's Capitol Hill yesterday (20.01.09) to watch the historic day which saw the first African-American President sworn in.
